Tell us a little about your background.
I completed my dental school and residency training at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. During my residency, my husband got transferred to Nashville and I followed him after completing my orthodontic program in 2010. At first, the plan was to just be in Nashville for a few years, but we fell in love with the area and decided that we would make Nashville our forever home to raise our family.
I have two children, a son Jacob, who is 4 and a daughter Mila, who is 2. I am currently pregnant with another boy due in October. Outside of that, I love to cook and exercise. I love to cook all kinds of foods from American foods to ethnic foods, you name it my kids love it! As for exercise, my favorite is Barry’s Boot Camp and Pure Barre. Pure Barre is particularly great during my pregnancy!
Have you always worked at the Cool Springs Snodgrass-King location?
When I first joined Snodgrass-King Dental Associates, I was traveling between our four offices at the time — from Murfreesboro to Cool Springs to Spring Hill to Hermitage. About 3 years ago, I became the Director of the Orthodontic Department. We changed the way that we operate so that there is one Orthodontist in each location for convenience to the patients for making appointments. This position also allows me to train all of the new Orthodontists that join our practice.
I have such a passion for teaching that I enjoy not only teaching but learning from my fellow Orthodontists! The Cool Springs location has become my home and I have developed such a great bond with all of our staff and patients.
Why did you choose to become an orthodontist?
When I was in college, my dad was very influential in giving us the confidence to do something independent. He encouraged my sister, brother and I to pursue strong career paths, such as being a doctor or a dentist. During college, I attended a Gateway to Dentistry program that exposed me to all aspects of dentistry, including Orthodontics and I absolutely loved it! As someone that has never had braces before, I was in awe with how changing a person’s smile can really transform a person’s face and self-confidence.
Is anyone in your family a dentist?
My dad’s brother and nephew are dentists, but I did not grow up around them. That was most likely why he encouraged me to look into dentistry as a possible career path.
When do you recommend a patient should visit an orthodontist for an oral evaluation?
The American Academy of Orthodontics recommends that all patients should have an evaluation by an orthodontist by the age of 7 when the first molars have erupted. This is a good age in which crowding and skeletal issues may be diagnosed and planned for treatment.
Orthodontics has gone through a major transition. Now, a two-phase treatment for braces is recommended if the patient could benefit from it. This significantly reduces older children having braces for 4 or 5 years. The two-phase treatment more importantly addresses skeletal and dental issues that can be orthopedically corrected a lot more easily than when the patients are older and do not have as much growth potential.
What do you love most about being an orthodontist?
Simply said, I love making beautiful smiles. The before and after’s of our cases show how we change the lives of our patients. We give the people of all age the confidence that they wouldn’t normally have. It’s amazing. Taking a patient’s braces off and seeing them admire their smile is the most incredible feeling.
