CROWNS
Where damage to a person’s teeth is extreme due to decay or fractures, we can use porcelain, porcelain “fused to metal”, or gold crowns to make the smile appear like new. This is an extremely reliable technique for repairing one of the most severe and common of dental problems. We are renowned for the quality of our work and the fantastic changes we make for people using this technology. These treatments are used for a long-lasting correction of major dental problems.
When do you need a dental crown?
A dental crown is needed when more than 60% of the tooth structure is compromised either by decay (cavity), existing filling with new decay or fracture, large filling with multiple fractures causing sensitivity or broken tooth structure. That’s why you should see a dentist as soon as possible after you sustain an injury to your tooth. Especially if it was a minor injury, you may not have to have a dental crown placed.
How long does it take?
Fitting a crown requires at least two visits to our office. Initially, we will remove decay, shape the tooth, and fit it with a temporary crown fabricated of composite (plastic-like) material.
On the subsequent visit, approximately 2 weeks later, we will remove the temporary crown, and then fit and adjust, if needed the final crown. Finally, we will cement the crown into place and you have a new beautiful looking tooth.
What if my temporary comes off?
If you follow the instructions, it is rare that the temporary will come off. However in the case that it does, it is important to have it put back on. Call the office and we will find an appointment at your earliest convenience to put it back on or remake it if needed.
Do you do same day crowns? Yes!!!!! We do have the CAD/CAM technology to provide same day crowns. If this is something you are interested in please let us know. CAD/CAM or Cerec crowns are technique sensitive and case selective. Your tooth and bite (occlusion) have to be eligible for a Cerec crown in order for us to be able to provide this service.
What are the key benefits?
- Repairs smile and function to the tooth
- Offers support to misshapen teeth or broken teeth
- Looks and feels natural
What are the capabilities of crowns?
Crowns are a reliable solution for major dental problems caused by accidents, diseases, or wear and tear. Materials used in these repairs are either high-grade porcelain or porcelain bonded to high noble metal or gold. A higher strength of the porcelain and gold materials is recommended to treat the most serious dental problems.
Why do I need a crown as a preventative treatment?
Many people have unexplained sensitivity/pain from filled back teeth that is usually due to hairline cracks in the tooth. Placing crowns on these teeth relieves the sensitivity/pain and allows a return of full dental function for these teeth. In front teeth, older fillings can both weaken the teeth and cause appearance problems due to staining or chipping.
If I had a root canal, do I need a crown? Most of the time, yes! When a tooth is root canal treated, the structure is compromised and weakened. Statistics show root canal teeth that are crowned last longer than those that are not. Rarely, very little tooth structure is compromised during the root canal and the tooth is strong enough with a filling rather than a crown.
