Adult-Braces

“Braces Look Funny on Adults”

You’re not in middle school anymore so the window of time that you can get braces has passed, right? WRONG!

Adult braces (pdf) are actually much more common than you think. Approximately 1 million Americans over the age of 18 have braces. Today, there are subtler and less visible options for braces that often times make you more comfortable starting your adult orthodontic treatments.

Why Adults Need Braces

There are two primary reasons you may find yourself needing braces as an adult.

  1. Your Teeth Have Probably Shifted
As you grow older, your once straight teeth may shift. This can happen due to injury, natural growth, a condition called tongue thrust, or as a result of not wearing your retainers (your orthodontist didn’t tell you to wear these as a kid just because they made you talk funny!). This can lead to jaw pain and difficulty properly cleaning your teeth.
  2. You Never Had Braces
Maybe you just never had braces. Well, it’s not too late! Adult braces can help crooked or crowded teeth, overbites and underbites, incorrect jaw position or jaw disorders. When these issues are left untreated it can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, headaches, earaches, speaking, biting, or chewing problems.

Is Orthodontic Treatment Effective For Adults?

Adults receive the same benefit of a beautiful smile and improved oral health as children do from braces. Orthodontic treatments move teeth in the same way for both adults and children. The difference is adult bones are no longer growing, so it typically takes longer for them to see results than it does for children and teenagers. With so many new advances in orthodontics, though, concealing orthodontic treatments is more effective and easier than ever. So you can get that straight smile you want without feeling self-conscious.
